PUNJAB WINS NATIONAL GAMES

The Punjab Basketball Men team won the 34th National Games at Ranchi by thrashing Uttrakhand 97-57 in a one sided final Talwinderjit Singh 28, Yadwinder Singh 19, Arjun Singh 15 and Gagandeep Singh 13 were the main scorers for Punjab.In the semifinals Punjab beat Tamil Nadu 67-59.
The Punjab team was coached by Dr. S. Subramanian and comprised of Jagdeep Singh (Captian), Talwinderjit Singh, Yadwinder Singh, Arjun Singh, Gagandeep Singh, Dilawar Singh, Amritpal Singh (Sr.), Amritpal Singh (Jr.), Bharat Deep, Rajbir Singh, Amjyot Singh and Gurkirpal Singh. In the pool matches, Punjab defeated Services 71-62, Andhra Pradesh 112-40 and Jharkhand 80-47. Services won the Bronze Medal beating Tamil Nadu 81-68 in the 3rd place match.
In the last 20 yrs Punjab (Men) have won the National Games 3 times -1997 Bangalore, 2001 Ludhiana and 2011 Ranchi, been runners up twice at 1999 Manipur and 2002 Hyderabad & third placed twice at 1994 Pune and 2007 Guwahati which is the best among all states of India.
The women’s final was won by Tamil Nadu which defeated Chhattishgarh 79-48. Delhi won the 3rd place defeating Maharashtra 79-59.

Sh. ANIL KUMAR PUNJ NO MORE
Sh. Anil Kumar Punj, Arjuna Awardee, former outstanding International Basketball Player of India died on 14.1.2011 in Delhi. He had an illustrious career in the Border Security Force from 1968 to 2004 from where he retired as Commandant. He distinguished himself at the international and national level and was a member of the Indian Basketball Teams which participated in the Asian Games 1970-Bangkok, in the Asian Basketball Championship 1971-Tokyo and 1973-Manila. Anil Kumar Punj was a highly talented, brilliant and respected player. He had great sportsmanship and always gave his best to the team.
He bagged 2 Gold, 4 Silver and 4 Bronze Medals in National Basketball Championships and also 13 Gold Medals and 2 Silver Medals in All India Police Games. He was decorated with the Arjuna Award by the Govt. of India in 1974 and Police Medal for Meritorious Services 1992 and was also decorated with the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Award by the Punjab Govt. in 1986.
The Punjab Basketball Association in a special meeting presided over by Sh. R.S.Gill, IPS (Retd.) condoled the sudden demise of Sh. Anil Kumar Punj. In this hour of grief, the Punjab Basketball Association stands by the Anil Kumar Punj family and offers all help wherever and whenever required.
PBA HONOURS COMMONWEALTH CHAMPIONS

The Punjab Basketball Association at a special function held on 23rd October 2010 in Punjab Police Academy, Philllaur honoured the Commonwealth Games, 2010 Delhi, Medalists Inspr. Manjit Kaur & Ms. Mandeep Kaur who won Gold Medal in 4x400 mtr. Relay & Ms. Harwant Kaur, who won Silver Medal in Discus Throw. The Association also honoured Outstanding Coaches Sh. G.S. Sandu, Chief National Coach Boxing & Sh. P.R. Sondhi, Chief National Coach Wrestling who were instrumental in India dominating the Boxing & Wrestling competitions in the Commonwealth Games. Sh. Ranbir Singh Sidhu, Coach of Inspr. Manjit Kaur, & Sh. Baljinder Singh Coach of Ms. Mandeep Kaur were also specially hoonoured. Sh. R.S. Gill, President, Basketball Federation of India & Punjab Basketball Association presided over the function.
